Collaborator - Anna Beam

Anna Beam is a multi-disciplinary artist and designer currently based in Manchester. Since summer 2009, Anna has been working on a variety of independent and collaborative projects ranging from illustration, conceptual design, prop making and youth workshops in addition to exhibiting her personal work.

Her work is rooted in a fascination with outdated visions of the future in design and science fiction. Her work varies in scale and methodology; sometimes digital, sometimes large scale three-dimensional.

This collaboration with the Vokov Commanders during the Free For Arts Festival initiates a shift in her practise towards set design and costume. During the festival you can also catch her collaborative window display with art director Rebecca Maeve Manley.

CENTROV

Through performance, sculpture, dance, costumes and animal imagery i want to conjure a strong dystopian aesthetic. Inspired by so many different sources including post-apocalyptic films, science fiction, shamanism, religous dogma and idolatry my works meaning is often purposefully obtuse yet my aesthetic is immediately arresting and people can engage with it far more because i appropriate symbolic imagery and found objects. I want the viewer however to feel part of the complex tapestry of the universe, i want them to understand that all understanding is incomprehensible and facile.

FINE ART PERFORMANCE AND FASHION

Call for proposals

The ‘Volkov Commanders’ are inviting artists, fashion designers, textilists and performers to collaborate together to create ambitious projects culminating in an event staged over three evenings in a central Manchester location in February 2011.

The event is based on the theatrics of contemporary fashion so we want ideas and pieces based in costume/fashion and performance.

Deadline for proposals: 30th November 2010

Piccadilly Place is opening one of it’s ground floor retail units to the artist community to bring life to the complex and make use of it’s prime location in the centre of Manchester and next to Piccadilly train station.

Go to Panoply-Manchester.blogspot.com for images of the space and more information

Deadline Guidelines:

Please send your ideas (one side of A4) to The Volkov Commanders at volkovcommanders@gmail.com please try to include any images of previous work or examples of your idea attached as .Jpeg or .pdf files.

Feel free to get in touch if you are interested in participating in the project but do not have any concrete ideas.

EPIOV

Driven by the need for excess, my work explores multiple components and extreme ‘dressing’ of the female form. Inspired by historical costume and Haute Couture, I have created body props that interact with the wearer and the viewer. I see my work in a performative or editorial context, in which people’s perceptions of beauty and body adornment are held up to scrutiny and challenged. The work questions the boundaries between dream and reality and employs an aesthetic that points to the fine line between the sublime and the grotesque.

YOLKOV

Through combining performance and installation with costume/mask wearing and fashion my work seeks to create dialogue on the nature of dressing up for display. This relies heavily on the juxtaposition of situation and chance encounter with the audience. Each element of the performance is carefully crafted and constructed with a heavy emphasis on fashion and costume, looking at displacement of the garments from their routinely socially accepted environment.Masks feature heavily in my work as I am fascinated by mystery and concealment of identities, inspired by European folklore, cultural adornment and courtship rituals right up to the more macabre and sinister aspects of mask wearing found in horror.
